Full-Time NP: Senior Reference Librarian

Job Description

To assist the Reference Manager in supervising and leading the Reference team in developing and promoting the use of library resources and information services. Competency with use of reference & information sources both print, and online is required. You will also be required to guide the team in handling reference enquiries, conduct research skills sessions to promote information literacy, promote the use of resources, participate in collection development and lead in Web application library projects.


  • A good degree and a recognised professional qualification in Library and Information Science
  • Minimum 4 years experience in performing similar operations
  • Good communication skills both oral and written
  • Ability to multi-task and juggle priorities to meet users’ information needs
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Strong managerial skills with experience in leading teams
  • Savvy with use of presentation software, Microsoft Office applications and good knowledge on social networking technologies. Web application knowledge will be an advantage.

Librarian (Acquisitions Section)
The successful candidate will support the Acquisitions Section in the following duties:

  • Provide management and administrative support to the Section Head, to ensure the smooth operation and delivery of all Acquisition functions and services
  • Supervise staff and provide support in the ordering, receipting, physical processing, claim generation & monitoring and withdrawal of books/AV materials
  • Manage library events and projects such as Book Fairs, etc.
  • Manage vendors’ performance and ensure compliance to Service Level Agreements
  • Responsible for good record keeping & filing, maintain and document procedures
  • Provide Circulation/Information service, and perform shift duties when rostered.


  • A good degree preferably in Science, Engineering or Computer Science. A recognised professional qualification in Library and Information Science will be an advantage.
  • Relevant working experience in book or media materials purchasing will be an advantage
  • Knowledge of the Aleph Library System will be an advantage
  • Conversant in MS Word, MS Excel, etc.
  • Good communication skills both oral and written
  • Team leading ability with good interpersonal skills
  • Strong administrative and analytic problem solving skills.

Manager (Cataloguing)
The successful candidate will have overall responsibility in:

  • Providing innovative leadership, vision, planning and supervision for cataloguing and metadata services
  • Supervising operations for original and copy cataloguing of print, multi-media resources, electronic books using MARC or other metadata formats
  • Monitoring national and international trends in metadata creation and direct on-going review and revision of metadata/cataloguing policies and procedures
  • Providing interpretations on existing and emerging metadata standards and rules.


  • A good degree and a recognised professional qualification in Library and Information Science.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional cataloguing/metadata experience
  • Experience with OCLC Connexion and WorldCAT databases
  • Experience with MARC21, AACR2, LCSH, LC Classification, FRBR, RDA and other metadata schema such as Dublin Core and EAD
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues and methods of access and discovery to scholarly resources
  • Excellent planning, organizational and communication skills
  • Proficiency with cataloguing modules of a library management system
  • A good command of the Chinese language and knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin romanization system is preferred.
