Contract NLB – Pay Per Record Scheme – Cataloguing of NLB Library Collections

Job Description

The National Library Board of Singapore is looking for individual(s) to provide descriptive and subject cataloguing of all materials, print and non-print, special materials, in the library collections. Other type of work required is assigning Call numbers and LCSH, quality check (QC) on bibliographic records in terms of Call numbers, LCSH and Name Authorityand/or perform other professional work such as user acceptance test and system stress test.

About NLB Library Collections   

NLB library collections cover Singapore and non-Singapore print and non-print (eg AV, talking book) materials, special materials which include maps, microfilms, posters, calendars and rare books, in the 4 official languages (English, Chinese, Malay, Tamil) and other languages like Japanese, Korean, French, Dutch. The cataloguing requirements are in line with international cataloguing standards like Dewey Decimal Classification and established library policies/guidelines using the latest editions of AACR, OCLC bibliographic formats and other established standards including RDA and Library of Congress Subject Headings. All work should also accommodate FRBR and FRAD requirements and RDA-compliant. NLB contributes its bibliographic records to OCLC.

 Job Requirements:

  • 5 to 8 years of relevant cataloguing experience, in a variety of format;
  • Good command of English and communication skills (writing and speaking) for cataloguing of English work;
  • A good command of Tamil and knowledge of Murasu Anjal Romanization and Tamil diacritics is essential for cataloguing Tamil materials;
  • Knowledge and familiar with international cataloguing standards Library of Congress Subject Headings (eg OCLC), one or more of these metadata schemas or tools and MARC bibliographic and authority formats  (eg AACR2r, MARC21, DDC, LCSH, Dublin Core, RDA);
  • Aptitude for handling detailed work
  • Additional requirements only for cataloguing of special materials:
  • Possess the required skills or knowledge in handling specialized materials, e.g.  sound technical knowledge when cataloguing cartographic materials or have a good understanding of music when cataloguing music materials and etc
