In a corner of Tiong Bahru unbeknownst to many, is a bookbinding workshop. Founded long before the estate saw a retro revival in recent years, the Sheltered Workshop is made up of a team of craftsmen with disabilities.
For the past 30 years, the craftsmen have been repairing books for libraries such as the National Library Board, National Institute of Education, Temasek Polytechnic and Nanyang Polytechnic. This workshop, which is part of SPD, formerly known as Society for the Physically Disabled, provides employment to people with disabilities. It gives them not only an opportunity to attain financial independence, but also a unique sense of identity as craftsmen.
The workshop welcomes work from both libraries and individuals looking to repair old books or bind new ones. Book repair services include stitching pages as well as replacing covers and endpapers using library book cloth imported from Europe.
For enquiries, e-mail email@example.com or call 6579 0742.
The Sheltered Workshop is located at SPD, 2 Peng Nguan Street, SPD Ability Centre, Singapore 168955.
It is open from Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 5pm.
