Duke UniversityAdvertising and Society – Duke University. Commencing on 27 October 2014.

This course examines the relation of advertising to society, culture, history, and the economy. Using contemporary theories about visual communications, we learn to analyze the complex levels of meaning in both print advertise-ments and television commercials. It covers a wide range of topics, including the origins of advertising, the creation of ads, the interpretation of ads, the depiction of race, class, gender, and sexuality in advertising, sex and selling, adverting and ethics, and the future of advertising.

UNiversity of Edinburgh E-Learning and Digital Cultural – The University of Edinburgh. Commencing on 3 November 2014.

This course will explore how digital cultures and learning cultures connect, and what this means for the ways in which we conduct education online. The course is not about how to ‘do’ e-learning; rather, it is an invitation to view online educational practices through a particular lens – that of popular and digital culture.

This five-week course will require 5-6 hours of work per week.

University of London Understanding Research Methods – University of London. Commencing 3 November 2014.

This course is about demystifying research and research methods. It outlines the fundamentals of doing research, aimed primarily, but not exclusively, at the postgraduate level. It places the student experience at the centre of our endeavours by engaging learners in a range of robust and challenging discussions and exercises befitting SOAS, University of London’s status as a research-intensive university and its rich research heritage.
