Listen. Letter from Gene

I was watching X Factor auditions two nights ago and there was an 18 year old who belted out Beyonce’s Listen from the movie Dreamgirls.

Listen. Think that is the most important quality any ruling government should have, and any LAS council that wants to stay connected should have.

Our membership chair Khoo Ai Ling and council member Joan Wee are starting something called ‘Project Then What’. This came from a comment from our Council brainstorming where someone said that people sometimes ask, “Ok so I have joined LAS, then what!”

I was especially shocked when someone said during the brainstorming session that she really detested high teas and that is not the reason he/she joined LAS. Another felt that food is a major distraction. The things we take for granted about what people want 😉

So that got us thinking that rather than assuming what people want from LAS, we should just ask.

So Ai Ling and Joan will be asking you. We will be triggering that with the Council’s personal answers to The question ‘Then What?’. Think there might be prizes? Haha that we are assuming most people would like that! So look out for this.

About IFLA, have you send your ideas in yet to win that ipad2? I want to thank those who responded to my last message and have volunteered. We will be organizing working committees soon once we have settled on the direction for this IFLA event.

In the meantime we are looking for folks who can join our committees as these will be major platforms for us to deliver IFLA 2013!

A special call out for folks who would like to be reporters for our Publications Committee. We are looking for folks who can submit happenings in their respective institutions for inclusion in our new look website and blog. This could be done through a link to your institution’s blog as well. With the upcoming IFLA 2013 and the prestige publication of Librarians in Singapore, as well as growing the Singapore Libraries Bulletin Blog, this is a major growth area for LAS.

If you are keen, please do drop a note to me or our Publications Chair Yit Chin Chuan at publications@las.org.sg.

Patrick Pu from our Business Development Committee is also looking for folks interested to help us find new revenue streams for LAS – this is an exciting area for LAS to think through products and business areas for LAS on top of our current business stream including publications and periodicals. Already, Patrick is thinking through some very cool signature products and merchandise for LAS. With IFLA 2013 coming, the business development aspect of LAS including engagement of business partners will scale up dramatically.

In his manifesto, Patrick will be telling you more. Please do drop a note to me or to Patrick at business@las.org.sg if you care keen to find out more.

Have you nominated someone deserving for LAS Awards? We are still open to nominees for the Outstanding Newcomer Award. Please do contact our tireless LAS Awards Panel Chair Joe Kennedy at jkennedy@pacific.net.sg.

Come the new year we’ll be having a New Year’s Brunch on 7 Jan 2012 to honor these deserving. Details will come very soon but book your date for the morning. We will be using the occasion to honour ht receipients of the LAS Awards.

And finally a special call out to support the Special Libraries Section Annual Networking Session on 9 Nov. the section has been doing some amazing things so do drop by and chat with them.

See you soon.
