With finite human and financial resources, academic libraries have to reconcile the conflicts between growth and sustainability. How can libraries propel sustainable growth with sustainable resources?
Theme 3 – Sustainable Technologies
Green information technologies reduce ecological footprint while improving efficiency and experiences for users and staff. Hot topics include virtualization and cloud computing, shared integrated library system, and mobile applications.
Theme 4 – Sustainable Services

Witness Magna Carta at the Li Ka Shing Library

Comments Off on Witness Magna Carta at the Li Ka Shing Library

800 Years of Magna Carta

Magna Carta is one of the most important documents in history. It is a foundation stone of the legal systems of the UK, Singapore and Common Law countries. It has inspired the development of parliamentary democracy, equality before the law and equal rights.

Magna Carta was an attempted truce in the year 1215 between ‘bad’ King John of England and leading figures, the Barons, who had rebelled against his unjust and arbitrary rule. Although it was filled with many detailed matters of concern to the Barons, it helped to develop the rule of law, a concept crucial to the success of the legal systems of both the UK and Singapore today.

The Hereford Cathedral’s 1217 version of Magna Carta, one of only four copies surviving, was on public display at the Supreme Court of Singapore from 19 to 23 November 2015. Now, a replica of the document has been brought to the Li Ka Shing Library. Admission is free and all are welcome.

JTS
Joint Technical Symposium (JTS): SUSTAINABLE AUDIOVISUAL COLLECTIONS THROUGH COLLABORATION
SINGAPORE
7TH-9TH MARCH, 2016

The Joint Technical Symposium (JTS) explores the technical issues affecting the long term survival and accessibility of audiovisual collections. JTS is an international symposium and brings together the world’s foremost research and thinking regarding the preservation and accessibility of moving image and recorded sound collections, from 19th century endeavours to the most recent digital technologies.

Since the last JTS in 2010 the audiovisual archiving world has seen many dramatic changes and advancements in the technologies that enable preservation. The rate and magnitude of these changes requires a collaborative approach to enable all archives to make sense of the best way to keep collections alive for future generations.

The theme of JTS 2016 “Sustainable Audiovisual Collections Through Collaboration” addresses this dynamic landscape. The papers presented at JTS 2016 will cover the ongoing technological viability of audiovisual collections both as individual items and holistically, as well as every aspect of audiovisual media preservation and access such as conservation and restoration, harvesting and accessing collection information – including metadata and intellectual property.

JTS 2016 is organised under the auspices of UNESCO affiliate the Co-ordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations (CCAAA) and its members’ Technical Committees. The event is hosted by the South East Asia-Pacific Audio Visual Archive Association (SEAPAVAA) and the National Archives of Singapore (NAS).

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT, CCAAA
“The art and science of audiovisual preservation and access has been evolving at breakneck speed in the digital age. Since the last Joint Technical Symposium in 2010 many new techniques have emerged. The next Symposium, which will be held in Singapore in March 2016, will bring together experts from around the world to hear about these exciting developments, as well as to interact with each other. It should be a most productive experience for all who attend. We hope to see you there!”
– Tim Brooks, President, Co-ordinating Council of Audio Visual Archives Associations (CCAAA)
