LAS PROFESSIONAL SERVICE AWARD

The LAS Professional Service Award aims to recognize LAS members who demonstrate  outstanding leadership and commitment to the library profession.

The Award

The award consists of a framed painting worth up to S$500.00.

Criteria for the Award

  • An active LAS personal member working in the library profession with at least 5 years experience

  • Shows strong leadership in the profession

  • Has made significant contributions to the profession over a period of time.

Who is not Eligible for the Award

  • Current council members

  • Current LAS Award Panel members

  • Recipients of LAS Lifetime Contribution Award

  • Recipients of Honorary Membership

Council and LAS Award Panel are eligible to submit nominations for deliberation.

Selection Process

Nominations must be received by the nomination deadline, 4 September 2009.  The LAS Awards Panel, appointed by the LAS Council, shall evaluate nominations received.  The selection panel’s decision will be final.   The award will be presented at a time selected by the Council.


LAS OUTSTANDING NEWCOMER AWARD

The LAS Outstanding Newcomer Award aims to recognize the accomplishments of  outstanding newcomers to the library profession and to encourage outstanding contributions throughout their careers. 

The Award

The award consists of a $200 voucher

 Criteria for the Award

  • Personal membership in LAS

  • 5 or fewer years experience in the profession

Sample Attributes

  • Outstanding job performance.

  • Involvement in professional activities

  • Development of notable workplace innovations

  • Success in promoting the library profession

Submission Procedure

Nominations shall include:

                         Name of nominee

                        Year nominee first entered the library profession

                        Year joined LAS

                        A write-up stating the nominee’s accomplishments

                        Curriculum vitae

 LAS LIBRARY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP

The LAS Library School Scholarship aims to support and encourage individuals to attain higher education in the library profession.  It provides financial support to an individual for graduate study in a recognized school of library science, leading to an MLS, M.Sc. (Information Studies) or equivalent, who has the potential to have an exceptional career as a librarian.

Award

  • S$4,000 to partially cover tuition in a school of library and information science or the equivalent

Selection Criteria

  • Accepted degree candidate, in a graduate school of library and information science, working towards an MLS or its equivalent
  • Applicants with, at least, one quarter/semester remaining AFTER scholarship is awarded
  • Quality of  personal statement (500-1000 words) discussing your interest in librarianship, reasons for applying for the scholarship, career goals and any other pertinent information you would like the LAS Awards Panel to know about you
  • Strength of recommendations describing personal character, and likelihood of academic and professional success in the library field

 Submission Procedures

 The documents that must be submitted include:

  • Application form
  • Letter from the Admissions Officer of the library school, stating the program for which you have been accepted and the date the courses begin or if you have already matriculated into library school, a transcript showing that you are a degree candidate in good standing
  • Transcript from the institution which granted your most recent degree prior to library school (official or student copy)
  • At least one letter of recommendation, preferably, from an instructor who has knowledge of your academic ability and who can comment upon your library employment experience,  if any, or interest in librarianship or potential for career success
  • Personal Statement (500-1000 words)

  • LAS Council Members and their relatives
  • LAS Award Committee Members and their relatives

Selection Process

The deadline for submitting the completed application including all attachments is on or before 4 September. The Award recipient will be contacted in September and the funds will be made available soon thereafter.  Early submission of the application packet is encouraged to ensure that all parts of the application are included. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. The LAS Awards Panel, shall evaluate applications. The selection panel’s decision will be final.
